What Is a Hardware Wallet?

A hardware wallet is a physical device — typically the size of a USB stick or small smartphone — that stores the private keys to your cryptocurrency offline, away from internet-connected computers and phones.

This "cold storage" approach is widely considered the gold standard for protecting digital assets because even if your computer is compromised by malware, your private keys never leave the device. To authorize a transaction, you physically confirm it on the device's screen.

Hardware wallets support thousands of cryptocurrencies and tokens. Most pair with companion applications on a computer or phone for viewing balances and signing transactions.
